Did you know that the oldest pair of skates found to date are from around 3000 B.C. and were discovered at the bottom of a lake in Switzerland?
Thousands of years of skating has brought us a beautiful establishment right here in Alpena. Northern Lights Arena was built in 2003 due to dedicated community efforts and collaboration to build Northeast Michigan’s first indoor ice arena. NLA provides us with not one, but TWO, first-class official NHL sized skate rinks named The Pond and The Puddle. These two state of the art ice rinks offer skating opportunities for hockey teams, figure skating, and open skating to the public.
Northern Lights Arena also offers learn to skate programs as well as non-ice related events featuring a 1/8-mile rubberized walking/running track, 8 full service locker rooms, seating for 1,200 patrons, concession stand, and RC’s Hockey Shop for equipment rentals. Do you or your child have a birthday coming up? Book a glow skate party at Northern Lights Arena! There are 2 birthday packages to choose from to fit your budget. Find your perfect birthday package HERE. Upcoming events include a summer kick off extravaganza and vintage snowmobile show and swap in April, and an indoor car show in May. See HERE for details.
This arena is a huge asset to the Alpena area and as a 501 (c) (3) registered non-profit organization, they rely on community support and volunteers to maintain this amazing facility. Click HERE to donate or contact Keli for volunteer positions,
